What are AI popups?
AI popups are dynamic popup messages that use machine learning to automatically decide what to show each visitor and when to show it. The algorithms learn from visitor behavior, product performance, and conversion patterns to optimize every message.
The core difference from traditional popups is that AI handles timing, product recommendations, and other conditions automatically.
The most common types of AI popups in ecommerce include:
AI product recommendations popups. They automatically select which products to display based on each visitor's browsing history and behavior patterns similar to other customers who purchased. The algorithm matches visitors to relevant products without any manual product curation.
AI cart recovery popups. They automatically detect when a visitor is likely to abandon their cart by analyzing behavioral signals, then trigger personalized recovery messaging at the moment they're most receptive.

How AI popups work
At their core, AI popups use collaborative filtering, a technique that matches each visitor to others with similar browsing journeys, then recommends what those similar visitors purchased. It's pattern-matching at scale, powered by real visitor behavior rather than guesses about what should sell.
Here's how the AI popup software gathers the intelligence it needs:
Engagement signal
What AI measures
Popup use case
Add to carts
Products visitors showed intent to purchase
Highest priority, as visitor already wants something
Repeat product visits
Products viewed multiple times in a session
Gives recommendations for returning customers
Repeat product visits
Multiple views of the same item
Strong indicator of genuine consideration
Interaction depth
Clicks, scrolls, time on page
Distinguishes browsing from active shopping
Historical revenue
Sales performance data
Weights reliable products higher in recommendations
Stock levels
Current inventory status
Prevents recommending unavailable items
The algorithm continuously adjusts based on these signals:
A new arrival gets increased visibility even without historical sales data
A product that historically sold well might drop in recommendation priority if it's been out of stock for weeks
For cart recovery, the system learns which behavioral combinations predict abandonment, then triggers at moments when intervention is most likely to convert.

How to add AI popup with product recommendations to your Shopify store
Setting up AI product recommendations doesn't require technical expertise.
Here's what the process looks like:
Step 1: Install AI popup app and sync your store
Install your chosen AI popup app from the Shopify App Store.
The integration is automatic—the platform should connect to your Shopify data immediately and syncs your products, inventory, pricing, and customer information in real time. This is crucial because your recommendations need current data to work effectively.
In this tutorial, I'll use Wisepops.

Step 1: Create a new campaign
In Wisepops, go to Create popup campaign in the Popups main menu:

Step 2: Choose an AI template
In the template gallery, click Shopify category to see the AI popup templates designed for upsell and cross-sell.

Note:
Templates come pre-configured with AI targeting. Shopping suggestions template, for example, triggers after 6 page views + 2 seconds on page. Review these settings and adjust only if your specific store dynamics require it. The defaults are based on proven conversion patterns.

Step 3: Customize your design
Adjust colors, fonts, and copy to match your brand. Ensure product images display clearly—they're doing the heavy lifting in product recommendations. You can also customize image height and control product count displayed.

Step 3: Add product recommendations
To start adding the product you want the AI algorithm to consider, choose the product recommendation block on the template.
The options for that will appear on the left. Choose the category of recommendations (Personalized picks is the default one):

In the left panel, you’ll see two tabs: Products and Add to Cart.
Products
Here you can add or remove items from your campaign and set the total number of products included.
To add products:
Enter their IDs separated by commas:
id:4567890, id:4561193
Tip: The easiest way to find product IDs is in the admin URL, e.g.:
https://mystore.myshopify.com/admin/products/29934559144
To exclude products:
You can use any of these methods (no quotes needed):
Product ID:
id:435345555Exact title:
Blue summer socksPartial title:
sweater→ matches items like "Yellow summer sweater" or "Red winter sweater"Product tags:
tag:t-shirts

Add to Cart
In the Add to Cart tab, you can show Add to Cart buttons directly on your campaign, making it easy for users to add products. You can also customize the confirmation message to improve the shopping experience.

Step 5: Launch and monitor
Deploy your Ai popup campaign.
After 2-4 weeks, you'll have enough data to understand performance. The algorithm improves as it gathers more visitor behavior data, so initial weeks often show lower performance than later months.
How to add AI popup for cart recovery to your store
AI cart recovery automatically detects when visitors are likely to abandon without purchasing and triggers at the optimal moment.
Step 1: Install and connect
Same as product recommendations—install your chosen AI popup tool from the Shopify App Store and let the platform sync with your data.
Step 2: Select your AI cart recovery template
Example from Wiseops: choose an AI-powered cart recovery template from the Shopify category:

Step 3: The AI handles trigger detection
Unlike manual cart recovery campaigns, you don't need to set specific triggers. The AI automatically analyzes behavioral signals—time with items in cart, browsing patterns, cursor movement—and determines optimal trigger timing. It learns which signals predict actual abandonment and adjusts accordingly.
Check the settings in Display rules > Trigger:

Step 4: Personalize your campaign's design
Write copy that addresses common hesitations (shipping costs, trust concerns, pricing). The AI handles when and to whom it's shown; you handle the messaging that resonates with your brand:

Step 5: Launch and let it learn
Deploy your AI popup campaign.
The AI improves over time as it gathers more data about which behavioral patterns actually lead to abandonment, which popup message resonates with different visitor segments, and optimal timing.
Understanding AI popup targeting and triggers
AI takes care of much of the traditional targeting complexity. For product recommendations, pre-installed rules handle the basics—showing recommendations after meaningful browsing time. For cart recovery, the AI automatically detects abandonment signals rather than requiring you to set specific time delays.
What you actually control:
Audience-level decisions: Which customer segments see campaigns (first-time vs. returning, traffic source, device type). You can target by location, customer tags, UTM parameters, or custom properties.
Messaging and design: The copy and creative that appears once the AI decides to trigger. This is where brand voice matters.
Campaign parameters: Which products to include or exclude, price ranges to recommend, any business rules you want enforced (like never recommending products below a certain margin).
The bottom line
AI popups represent a fundamental shift in how ecommerce stores approach visitor engagement. Rather than manually creating dozens of variations and guessing about optimal timing, AI handles the personalization and optimization work continuously.
The stores winning in 2026 understand that showing the right product to the right person at the right moment isn't a luxury; it's expected.
